Just this week, my 18-year-old son asked me to bring home some mouthwash. For years, I brought it home religiously and it just sat on the counter. Now that he is 18, has a girlfriend, and cares about bad breath he has realized just how right I have been. I wonder if this new awareness will carry over into all the other advice I have given him…
Back to mouthwash, many people think it is just good for freshening your breath, but the reality is that mouthwash can help prevent cavities and periodontal disease. Depending on what type you use, it can reduce the amount of plaque and bacteria in your mouth. This is not to say that rinsing twice a day can replace your brushing and flossing. Mouthwash cannot remove plaque and residual food by itself. It is also important to use the right type of mouthwash. Many of them contain ingredients we don’t need or want and some contain ingredients that specifically irritate or exacerbate dry mouth and canker sores.
